Olympics bring pride to Chinese Americans

For the last 27 years, Bryant Fong has made an annual trek to Beijing, and every year the scenery changes. The highways spiral outward, the buildings grow taller, the hotels get fancier. On his last trip eight months ago, the San Francisco martial arts teacher needed only to venture outdoors to find modernization operating at Olympic speed.

“You’d find guys sleeping right next to the job site in the middle of the day,” Fong said. “They’d work four or five hours, eat, sleep, and get up and start working again, just so they can try to finish redoing the sidewalks.”

Beijing is a city hurtling toward a deadline as China readies for its first-ever Olympic Games. The Opening Ceremonies are only 11 days away, and the out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new mantra goes deeper than construction.

For the thousands of Chinese Americans in San Francisco, most of whom are first- or second-generation immigrants like Fong, the Olympics represent a coming-out party for their homeland.

The old one-way migration out of China has become a swirling network as the country grows into an economic force, and the words “proud” and “honor” are repeatedly used to describe its hosting duties.

“The people of China have changed,” said Joyce Lee, who emigrated 15 years ago. “The Olympics are the biggest event in the world, and it’s a good start to show people what China can do.”

Like most of the city’s Chinese immigrants, both Fong and Lee hail from the Cantonese-speaking province of Guangdong in southern China.

Fong, who was born in Oakland and raised all over the Bay Area, is the sifu, or teacher, of the San Francisco Wushu Team. He took his first group of martial arts students to China in 1980 and Replica Handbags returns yearly to the Shichahai Sports School, home of the Beijing Wushu Team, which boasts actor Jet Li among its alumni. Once a modest outpost, the school has become a symbol of China’s growing stature with three sprawling floors of gymnasiums, an underground parking lot and its own four-star hotel.

Rapid advancement

The hefty upgrade doesn’t surprise Zhang Ming Liang, who emigrated with his wife more than 20 years ago. On a recent afternoon, the retired couple watched their grandson play at Portsmouth Square in the heart of Chinatown.

Zhang joked about getting lost in Beijing, with all its high-rise towers, when he visits nowadays. He says relatives there boast about the latest advancements in cable television and other technology.

“The Olympics are guaranteed to be a success,” Zhang said. “China has plenty of money now, people, manpower, resources. There’s no fear of failure. It won’t happen.”

Zhang’s confidence stems not from any unbridled nationalism, but from having experienced the power and pitfalls of the Chinese government.

Pollution?

Cars in Beijing have begun operating on an alternate-day basis, with license plates ending with even numbers allowed to drive one day, odd numbers the next.

Protests?

When the Olympic torch came through San Francisco in April for its only North American stop, Fong and his Wushu students were invited to perform at Justin Herman Plaza. The show was supposed to be a backdrop for the torch relay as it moved along the Embarcadero. Instead, their demonstration was demonstrated against by protesters assailing China’s human rights record. The torch itself was a no-show, having been rerouted.

‘We’re all for China’

“A lot of protesters, they have no idea how to deal with the Chinese. They look at us as being homogenous,” Fong said. “Yes, we’re all for China. But we’re also aware that China has many difficulties, like with Tibet and Burma.

“You have to look at the history of China. You have to distinguish between the Chinese people and the government. A lot of Chinese Americans here are sympathetic to Tibetans. But we’re also proud of having the Olympics.”

Beverly Yip, who grew up on Sacramento Street in Chinatown, agrees. She was in Hong Kong the day before the torch returned to Chinese soil after its troublesome journey overseas.

As part of the festivities, a replica torch was on display at the Langham Place Hotel. Yip was among the throngs who excitedly waited more than 30 minutes to get pictures taken with the torch.

“For the shortest time, I was so proud,” Yip said. “I felt like a little child, and just the adrenaline rush. I was proud to be Chinese American, a hybrid of both cultures. I felt like I was that much closer to the Olympics.”

Lee might be the quintessential mix, having lived almost exactly half her life in China and half in San Francisco. In her mid-30s now, Lee owns a clothing boutique in the Sunset District, and as customers filtered in on a recent Sunday afternoon, she switched seamlessly among Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese (a dialect spoken in Guangdong province) and English.

‘It’s my homeland’

“I was really lucky,” Lee said. “I came when I was 17 so I got to go to high school and learn two different cultures. My friends tell me I’ve completely changed because I can compare now, I have my own judgment.

“But I still care about China. It’s my homeland. The people are really kind, and if they have the equal chance, equal rights, they’ll be better.”

Mei Yang left the Zhongshan prefecture more than 20 years ago with her husband, King. The couple opened a Chinese restaurant on Hayes Street within a year of arriving and now work 18-hour days at the Java Source Coffee House they own on Clement Street.

Expensive endeavor

Among her usual customers are Richmond District locals who congregate for some fresh coffee, Chinese chess and gossip. They wonder what it would be like to experience the Olympics firsthand, but finances have made the exercise moot. Plane tickets top $1,500 per person, and even the most modest accommodations will be double and triple their regular price.

“Then you have the business,” Yang said. “If we stay open, then we have to hire help. If we close, then we’re still paying the rent. It’s just too expensive to leave. We can’t afford it.”

Instead, they’ll watch their old home from their newest home, hoping that the Olympics can bring China respect and advancement on all fronts.

“In the end, we’re Chinese,” Zhang said. “Right or wrong, good or bad, it’s your own people.”

Enjoy Life Now, AND Save for Later

Wednesday, 31. March 2010 9:55

gemahrv0331

Often we’re told that we have to suffer now — give up what we want — in order to succeed later, that in order to save we must sacrifice. Give up instant gratification to get delayed gratification.

But you can do both.

For years, I was confused about this, as I read books and websites that sent me two different messages:

Pleasure later. The first message was that in order to be successful, in order to build wealth, you have to delay gratification. You can’t have instant gratification and be successful.

Pleasure now. The second message was usually from other sources on Happiness, but sometimes from the same source: enjoy life now, while you can, because it’s short and you never know when your last day will come. Live every day like it’s your last. Trouble is, I agree with both messages. And if you read this site often, you’ll see that I send both messages: Live frugally and simply! But also enjoy life!

That’s because I’ve reconciled the two philosophies into one: Live life now and enjoy it to the fullest — without destroying your future. The key to doing that? Find ways to enjoy life completely, utterly, maximally … that don’t cost your future very much.

Here are some tips for actually living that philosophy:

Find free or cheap pleasures. Frugality does not have to be boring or restrictive … if you use your imagination. Be creative and find ways to have fun — loads of it — without spending much money. Have a picnic at the park, go to the beach, do crafts, board games, fly a kite, make art, bake cookies … I could list a hundred things, and you could come up with a few hundred more. Make a list of simple pleasures, and enjoy them to the maximum. This is the key to the whole idea of enjoying life now without spending tomorrow’s dollar. See Savor the Little Things .

Make simplifying fun. I’m a big fan of simplifying my life, from decluttering to creating a simple lifestyle in every way. And to me, this is great fun. I get rid of stuff (and possibly make money selling it) and have a blast doing it. That’s good math.

Rediscover what’s important. Oftentimes we spend tons of money, shopping, going out, watching movies, eating out … without really enjoying life. And when we stop to think about it, we never have Replica Handbags time for the things we really want to do. Well, that’s probably because your life is filled with things that aren’t very important to you. Instead, step back and really think about what’s important to you. Then get rid of the other (expensive) stuff, and focus on what’s important. Listen to some stuff on my list: my wife and kids, other friends and family, reading, writing, exercising, volunteering, spending quiet time in contemplation. Guess how many of those things cost a lot of money? Read more here .

Make people a priority. This is related to the above point, but I thought I’d give it a little more emphasis. If you give “stuff” a priority — stuff like gadgets, nice furnishings, nice clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. — then you will spend a lot of money. But if you make people a priority — the people you love most, you close friends and family — you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy life. Make some time to visit with friends, or your parents … and have a conversation with them that doesn’t involve eating out or going to the movies. Just sit, have some iced tea or hot cocoa (depending on the weather), and talk. Tell jokes and laugh your heads off. Talk about books you’ve read, movies you’ve watched, new things going on in your life, your hopes and dreams. And make time for your kids or your significant other — really spend time with them, doing things that don’t cost money. (See Spend Time with Family and Loved Ones , 100 Ways to Have Fun With Your Kids and 50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap .)

Find time for yourself. Make time every day, and every week, to spend time alone. It really gives more meaning and enjoyment to your life, rather than rushing through life with no time to think, to breathe. For ideas on how to make this time, see these ways to create time for solitude .

Sometimes, splurge. You shouldn’t restrict yourself from expensive pleasures all the time — it’s not good to develop the feeling of deprivation. To prevent that, once in awhile, buy yourself something … or better yet, give yourself a decadent treat. I love things with dark chocolate or berries. Crepes with ice cream and berries are one of my favorites. Just don’t go overboard … and learn to enjoy the splurge to the fullest. If you truly take the time to enjoy a treat, you don’t need a lot of it.

Track your successes. It doesn’t really matter how you track your success … you can use gold stars for creating a new simplifying or frugalfying habit, or a spreadsheet chart to track your decreasing debt and increasing savings or investments. Tracking is a great way to not only provide motivation, but make the process of changing fun.

Reward yourself. And in order to make it more fun, celebrate every little success! Set rewards for yourself (hopefully not too expensive!) along your path to success — celebrate one day, two days, three days, a week, two weeks, three, a month … you get the idea. Volunteer. One of the most rewarding things for my family has been when we have managed to volunteer. It’s actually something we only started doing last year, but since then, we’ve done it a bunch of times in a number of different ways. And while it doesn’t cost a dime, it is tremendously satisfying in ways that money could never buy. Read more .

Live in the moment. Learn to think not so much about the past or future, but about what you are going through right now. Be present. It may seem trite, but it’s the key to enjoying life to the fullest — without having to spend money. Think about it — you can spend money on eating out, but if you are not really thinking about what you’re eating, you may not enjoy it much at all. But if you cook a simple but delicious meal, and really taste every bite, it can be tremendously enjoyable without costing a lot. Read more .

Slow down. In the same way, you can’t really enjoy life to the fullest if it’s rushing past you like it’s on fast forward. Ever think about how quickly a week, a month, or a year goes by? Perhaps you’re in the fast lane too much. Try slowing down, and things will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Drive slower , eat slower , live slower .

Learn to find cheap, cool stuff. Call me crazy, but I love shopping at thrift stores. You can find so many cool things there, and it costs so little. Garage sales are the same way. Or check out Freecycle , or read 20 Ways to Find Free or Cheap Books .

The Hidden Cities of China’s Past

Tuesday, 30. March 2010 15:37

gemahrv0330

Far from the Beijing Olympics and far from the Sichuan earthquake is another China — one that hasn’t been bulldozed and rebuilt in anticipation of the Games and one that won’t be transformed by their glamour. It’s a China that is long past but glimpsed in three remote and astonishingly well-preserved historic cities.

For three decades China has been systematically bulldozing its heritage. Tall buildings, often faced in white lavatory tile, and glitzy shopping malls have replaced much of the narrow hutongs of Beijing, the mud walls from Silk Road days of Xian, and the scenic canal houses of Suzhou. Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, has leveled narrow, winding streets, tile-roofed shops and centuries-old dwellings and put up featureless high-rises in rectangular grids.

The Old City of Lijiang, also in Yunnan, may be China’s best-known historic city. But fame has extracted a price: The ethnic Naxi people who give Lijiang its character have been largely overwhelmed by Han Chinese hotel developers, tour operators and trinket sellers. We headed for three other historic sites — Pingyao, in north-central China, which has been designated a Unesco World Heritage site; Fenghuang in Hunan province; and the old German quarter of Qingdao on the northern coast. While these cities get very few visitors from overseas, they are popular domestic vacation spots, and their pristine condition owes much to Chinese tourism.

PINGYAO

This town is almost perfectly preserved after 2,700 years. The road here starts in Taiyuan, the capital of impoverished Shanxi province, 250 miles southwest of Beijing. After 90 minutes of monotonous driving west through landscape that is unrelievedly flat, gray and parched, ancient city walls suddenly loom, like a mirage.

Over a restaurant dinner of local specialties, including beef stomach and noodles made from green-bean flour, Zhou Yujing, Pingyao’s 55-year-old now-retired director of tourism, reflected on how the town has managed to avoid the redevelopment so many other historic Chinese communities have gone through. ‘It was thanks to poverty that they didn’t rebuild the city,’ Mr. Zhou says. ‘Our poverty proved to be a blessing in disguise.’

But what makes Pingyao worth seeing is its long history of wealth. From the late 1700s to the early 1900s, it was China’s banking center, when affluent merchants created a sophisticated economic infrastructure for moving large sums of money; coded calligraphy on bank checks deterred counterfeiters. In the 18th century, bank owners Replica Handbags and merchants competed to flaunt their wealth, building houses with dozens of rooms opening onto multiple courtyards. Particularly impressive is the Rishengchang Financial House Museum, a courtyard home with more than 100 rooms and much of the original furniture. Mr. Zhou says by the 19th century, China’s banks numbered roughly 50; 40 were based in Shanxi, and half of those had headquarters in Pingyao.

The 20th century brought civil turmoil and then the Japanese invasion, and China’s business activity moved to the east coast. The old courtyard houses fell into disrepair along with Pingyao’s banking industry. Mr. Zhou says a revival started only this decade with the mass domestic tourism during China’s national vacation periods known as Golden Weeks.

Entrepreneurs have turned some of the most beautiful courtyard houses into hotels, preserving the architecture and introducing modern amenities such as air-conditioning and WiFi. Even so, as testimony to how remote and overlooked Shanxi province remains, the nicest of these hotels charges only about $50 a night, and $6 buys a lavish dinner.

A walk along the brick-paved streets of Pingyao, where almost 4,000 of the old courtyard dwellings have been preserved and 400 are considered of architectural merit, is more akin to time travel than to a museum visit. Some of the city’s major banking houses have been restored and now are open to visitors, with placards explaining what functions transpired in each room. The entire city is enclosed by a wall, dating back to the 14th century, that runs an unbroken four miles around the perimeter; outside is bleak, barren countryside. Visitors can walk the circumference on a brick road wide enough to accommodate two of the horse-drawn carriages that used to make the trip around. People climb the wall’s elaborate gates and towers to get a view.

A visitor might not see more than a couple of Western faces, but there are throngs of Chinese tourists descending from the buses parked outside the old city. That’s a downside to Pingyao: the sojourn back in time is marred by guides shouting into bullhorns and by tourist shops selling T-shirts and the local peanut brittle. The lack of English may present a problem, too: Of more than 300 guides, only five are English-speaking. Hu Shengfeng, one of the five, explains that students who leave Shanxi province to attend college and learn English tend not to return.

FENGHUANG

In south-central China, Hunan province — home of fiery food, birthplace of Mao Zedong — offers something many tourists find irresistible: the thrill of discovery, in an age when everything seems already to have been discovered. Hunan’s old city of Fenghuang isn’t even mentioned in some popular China guidebooks. But it is reason to make the trip to China — and even more so if paired with a visit to the national Wulingyuan Scenic Area, 150 miles away.

Wulingyuan is China’s Yosemite Valley, with soaring mountain peaks and 3,000 sandstone spires rising spectacularly from the valley floor. Trails along the creek at the bottom of the gorge take hikers past waterfalls and lush vegetation and offer bottom-up views of rock formations and steep cliffs; trails carved on the cliffsides thread their way around the spires, offering heart-stopping vistas of the drop to the valley floor. Moving about on top via free shuttle buses, you can choose from several hiking routes or break for lunch at rustic peasant farmhouses. As at Pingyao, hundreds of Chinese tourists — and guides with their flags and ubiquitous bullhorns — detract from the nature experience, but it’s a marvel nonetheless.

One of the many taxis that hang out in the Wulingyuan parking lots will make the trip to the city of Fenghuang. It’s a beautiful four-hour ride through terraced rice fields. Initially, Fenghuang may seem like another characterless, somewhat grimy Chinese city. But for a couple of miles along the Tuo River, which cuts through the heart of the city, Fenghuang moves back to previous centuries. A jumble of flagstone-paved streets go past stone houses and temples dating back to the 17th century. Wooden houses perched on stilts lean precariously over the river. At one end of a covered bridge is a food market, which opens in the evening to sell dozens of grilled-to-order meats, fish and vegetables. Boatmen offer rides up the river in small, ancient-looking wooden craft. Red lanterns hang everywhere. At night, vendors sell candles, each anchored to a base that will float in the river.

The old section is a functioning city populated mainly by the Miao ethnic minority. Most of the centuries-old houses are occupied; some have converted their ground floors to restaurants. Women wash clothes at the riverbanks; almost no one speaks English. But just a few English words, from a bellhop at the Government Hotel, were enough to get us into a taxi to visit Hongxing, a village half an hour away, where half the 1,000 residents still live in original houses with tile roofs and dried-mud walls, surrounded by rice fields. It’s as picturesque as China gets.

QINGDAO

Old China and the Olympic Games will meet in this sprawling city on the Yellow Sea. The site of Olympic sailing events, Qingdao has made news recently as thousands of soldiers have been mobilized to clear out the bright-green algae invading the water.

Pronounced ‘chin-dao’ — and, in its old spelling, recognizable as the birthplace of the famous Tsingtao beer — Qingdao is a rarity in China: a huge metropolis (population, eight million) that is beautiful and actually livable. Mile after mile of oceanfront presents parks, beaches, promenades and old mansions; the restaurants are famous throughout China for their seafood. Beijing’s polluted air and blaring auto horns will become a distant memory for sailing fans who venture here during the Games.

The old German quarter gives Qingdao much of its charm. Germany occupied Qingdao from 1897 until World War I, when Japan seized the city. The German occupiers left an indelible mark: cobblestone streets shaded by flowering European trees, European-style housing with red-tile roofs, and monumental edifices such as St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Governor’s Mansion. Qingdao has preserved all this, and its residents continue to embrace a European lifestyle. Streets surrounding the German quarter are filled with cafes and boutiques. New buildings adhere so strictly to the German architectural style that it is often hard to tell the old and new apart.

Qingdao is a walking city. It is also an eating city: At high-end seafood restaurants with ‘live’ menus, patrons walk through vast displays of fish, shellfish and vegetables in the company of a waitress and pick what they want. Even the most expensive seafood dinner at the best restaurant will cost no more than $15 a person.

As an added bonus, there’s the holy mountain of Laoshan. Most of China’s holy mountains are isolated, but Laoshan is less than an hour’s drive from the center of Qingdao. It’s a serene place filled with Taoist temples, hiking trails and waterfalls — a relaxing day in a nation where that word rarely applies.

home equity loan

Tuesday, 30. March 2010 15:35

gemahrv03030

A home equity loan is a type of credit wherein a lender agrees to let the borrower use a certain amount of money equal to the equity in a homeowner’s house. This type of loan typically has a fixed interest rate included in the home equity loan rate.

Unlike the home equity line of credit which allows a borrower to take out sums of money from time to time, a home equity loan gives the borrower the entire amount of money in a lump sum. This lump sum is determined by and calculated according to the equity of the borrower’s home which is used as the collateral. Some things Replica Handbags which are considered in evaluating the equity of the home are the amount of money that the homeowner invested in it and what kind of improvements that he or she has done to the property. Other things that determine the maximum amount of money that can be used in the loan are the borrower’s income, credit history, credit rating, ability to repay the loan, and etc.

The homeowner may not borrow any more money after getting the entire loan but this also means that the debt cannot and will not grow any bigger than the set amount. The home equity loan rate stays the same. Another thing that’s great about this type of loan is the tax benefits that one may get from it. The interest paid on the home equity loan rate can be deductible from one’s personal income taxes.

Remember that a home equity loan is a loan that is made against a person’s home. This may be a huge gamble for many people but because it is a secured debt, many consider it for important uses such as home repairs, college tuition, and medical bills. This type of loan is also just the right thing for borrowers who need large amounts and like knowing how much exactly to pay at each payment period. The fixed home equity loan rate makes payments very predictable and easy to budget. A home equity loan isn’t for people who need to keep borrowing money to pay for recurring expenses.

A home equity loan rate can vary greatly and depends on factors such as the borrower’s current situation and the laws that apply in the borrower’s area of residence. Shop around first to ensure that you get the best home equity loan rate. It is important to meet the minimum balance and to pay off the minimum payment so as not to jeopardize your home.

How should I say ‘hello’?

Friday, 26. March 2010 14:01

gemahrv0326

PICTURES of Lehman Brothers’ employees appeared in newspapers across the world last week. Many who may lose their jobs were consoling each other by hugging.

But is this correct etiquette for greeting someone? Should you use a hug, a kiss or just a friendly handshake? Greeting people in the West can be a daunting prospect, and to make things worse habits are changing all the time.

With so many different social settings and relationships, one can easily get confused about how best to say “hello” or “goodbye”. And with an ever-expanding selection of greetings, from back-pats to hand-slaps, it can be hard to know where to start.

“It can be a minefield. There are so many rights and wrongs you are normally best off simply smiling and letting the other person take the lead,” suggests Ashley Spencer, a student from the UK.

Of course the main factor to consider is how well you know the person. As a general rule the closer you are to a person, the more intimate your greeting can be. However, even this is not always a rule that can be relied upon.

Consider this situation. You are in a bar with some Replica Handbags friends and spot a work colleague of the opposite sex. You have known the work colleague for some time, but tend not to socialize outside of the workplace. How do you greet this person?

The BBC asked people this very question last year, and even though more than 20,000 people voted, no clear answer was decided.

The problem is that everyone has different ideas about the issue, and this can cause awkward situations. While some groups of close friends may kiss and hug each other when they meet, others may be more nonchalant.

Jasmine Gardner, a journalist from the UK, has her own system of greetings for different groups of friends. “School friends get one kiss, new acquaintances usually get a handshake and friends from university get a nod of the head for hello and goodbye. But most importantly, people I don’t particularly like, get nothing.”

The real answer is to be adaptable to all situations. If you offer a handshake but are approached for a kiss on the cheek, try and appear natural in accepting it. You need to strike a balance between not being over-familiar while also not appearing too uptight.

To further confuse the issue, there are different greetings between men and between women (See box). But whatever your approach to meeting and greeting, remember that if you are friendly, smiling and relaxed you should get along fine.
